Falling in LOVE with Fall!

Now that fall is almost over, I should say a few words about my favorite season before it is over for another year. Fall is that time of year that I feel my best, I loose weight easiest in the Fall, my skin feels better and my overall outlook on life is at its BEST. I believe the reasons for all of these wonderful happenings is because this is the season of my birth! My new favorite thing to do is riding my bike around Mantua Lake. I love the clean fresh air, the beauty of the Lake and the mountains is breath taking, I am addicted to riding my bike around the Lake, I even rode in the pouring rain and it was wonderful. I also love fall sports, soccer, football and volleyball......... I love Friday night Football under the light, fall officially starts when the lights turn on. I love fall soccer with the colorful leaves in the background. Fall is full of new beginning and endings. Fall is also a time of gratitude, I love to feel gratitude for all my many blessings. Go on join me.............. Fall in Love with FALL!!

It's Facebook official .............so I guess the ENGAGEMENT can be blog official!!!

YES I am so very excited!!! Brady and Rachel were engage to be married last weekend! I was in SHOCK! EXCITED SHOCK, still shocked!!. A couple of weeks ago Brady (who is in Washington DC) told me over the phone that he and Rachel (whom we love and adore) had decide that they both felt right about getting married, but not to tell anyone because it was not official yet. I was excited and thrilled and was having a hard time not telling anyone...........but I was keeping this little secret! Brady was coming home for Thanksgiving and I assumed that this wonderful occasion would take place then.

Last Saturday I decided to take on the challenge of cleaning Brady's room, because he left it a mess! I enlisted John's help and we were cleaning the basement. In the mean time Kasey said that he and Rachel along with Jeff and Alex were going to the Zoo. I joked around with Kasey that he had to be Rachel's entertainment while Brady was away! So back to cleaning the room, John went upstairs to get a garbage bag and returned to say that Rachel and Kasey had returned from the zoo. I said " great they can help me clean Brady's room", just as I finished saying this Brady entered the room said " I'll clean my room!" My mouth dropped opend and I didn't know what to say.........so I said "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HOME!" I had a hard time adjusting to the fact that the night before I had just talked with him and he was in Virginia, with no PLANS for the weekend!! Apparently Kasey was in on the plan and had to have an excuse to go to Salt Lake. About 2 minutes after being home Brady made up some excuse about needing to go to the doctor because of back pain and left, I thought it was kind of odd, to fly home to get a back adjustment.. (he instead went to Rachel's parents home in Logan to ask their permission to marry Rachel).............in the mean time Kasey was left once again to sit with Rachel!! Brady and Rachel met up again and he took her to one of their favorite places to watch the sunset and there he asked her to marry him!! ( yes, he got down on one knee!) They latter came back to tell us the news! The date is March 5th! Brady took a plane back to Washington DC on Monday morning........what a rush of a weekend! Needless to say I didn't get any pictures! So hear are some pictures from this summer.

It has been a crazy and busy fall.
This is one of my favorite time of the year and this year has been no exception! I have been enjoying life again with John. It is weird being just the two of us most of the time, but very FUN.

We have traveled to St. George a couple of times to watch Alex play ball and enjoy that beautiful part of our state.

We also enjoy going to the high school football games. We went to the homecoming game where I was named as one of the homecoming dedicates! That was a neat experience, being honored for my service in the PTA.

I loved being at the high school and being involved in the happenings of my children s lives. We also had the opportunity to attend Abbie's baptism, what a wonderful day for such a sweet girl. John and I have also made a new discovery which I totally love, and it is my new obsession............riding around the Mantua lake on our bikes. Ok, so it is not John's obsession but mine and he goes along to give me some company. But I do love riding up there, it is so peaceful and beautiful, I just love it! I am determined to take my camera along to let you in on the ride!

Please begin by answering this question: How do you feel right now?

One more question before we get down to business. If you were to take a random sampling of 100 people and ask, "How are you today?" can you guess the three most popular answers? Go ahead and make your guess and then scroll down and meet me for the answers.

The three most common responses are:

· "Fine."

· "Busy."

· "Overwhelmed."

Think about the last 10 times someone asked, "How are you?" How did you respond? Obviously, many times we are asked that question in a situation where we cannot go into a long-winded story truly relating our exact feelings of the moment. However these three common responses reveal something more.

"Fine," often becomes a blanket response because people don't know exactly how they feel. "Fine" isn't an emotion.

"Busy" and "Overwhelmed" aren't emotions either. They are levels of activity and responsibility, but not emotions or feelings. When we are busy or overwhelmed we might feel fatigued, anxious, worried, depressed, adrenaline-filled, etc.

Why does any of this matter? It matters because it all ties into self-awareness and self-connection, which are necessities for living a positive and centered life.

Here are three common dilemmas encountered often in psychotherapy:

1. I feel like there has to be "something more," but what is it?
2. I am not sure of what I want in life - how do I figure that out?
3. I don't know how I feel anymore.

These list items carry the common thread of lack of self-connection. When we are truly self-connected we are living "something more," we know where we are, what we want, where we want to go, and we are in the moment with how we feel.

There are many day-to-day distractions that act like a magnet pulling us away from self-connection. Learning to practice self-connection on a regular basis allows us to control the distractions and remain true to our values and mission versus having life's distractions bounce us around.

Considering Distractions:
This week, I'd like you to create a worksheet by taking a piece of paper and making two circles, one inside the other. Make the first circle as big as the paper, and then the second circle about half that size. On the line of the smaller circle, create five dots randomly on the line. On each of these dots write down an activity that centers you.

On the larger circle, create 10 dots, randomly along the circle border. On each of these dots, list 10 distractions that most commonly pull you from being centered. (You can add more or less dots as you like.) (Below is an image to guide you.)

Examples of centeredness-activities might include:

· Prayer

· Exercise

· Listening to a positive audio or reading a positive book

· Self-improvement courses

· Scripture study

· Lunch with a friend

· A massage

· A walk

· Time with family

· A hobby

· Church

Examples of distractions might include:

· Disorganization

· Telemarketing

· Negative people (list by name, listing each one as a distraction)

· Arguments

· Worry

· Pessimism

· Regret

· Anger

· Confrontation

· Television

· Computers

· Other technology

· Commitments you have outgrown (memberships, etc.)

· Children when they don't listen

· Siblings that argue

· Argumentative spouse or family member

· Debt and bill collectors

When you have completed your worksheet, make several photocopies.

Keep this worksheet in an easy-to-reference place. A quick visual glance of this worksheet each morning can help you see where you are likely to be distracted and what you need to do to stay centered.

Your Weekly Challenge:
For the next week evaluate this worksheet each evening by completing the following two exercises.

Connect the dots: Place your pen where you started your day. Did you start at one of your centered items? Or did you start with a distraction? Make a line to what you experienced next, until you have made lines to anything you experienced that day. How does your picture look? If you have zig-zaggy lines that continually move outside of your centered circle, don't beat yourself up, but use it as a "mirror" that shows why you are out of balance. Make your goal to improve the picture the next day. Excluding vacation, it is rare to stay completely in the centered circle, but we want to aim to stay primarily in the centered circle.

Count the hours: Next to each centered activity and distraction item write down an approximation of how many minutes you devoted to that activity. Then total up the amounts and write it on the bottom of the page. Your goal should be to spend at least 70% of the measured time in your centered zone. Note: it is not necessary to total 24 hours when you calculate time. This is not a time-tracking exercise. It is simply an activity to look at what brings you the most peace and what distracts you the most and then work toward expending more energy in the centered area.

Examining Distractions:
When trying to reduce our distractions it can be helpful to shine a spotlight on them. For each distraction you have listed, I encourage you to journal your answers to the following questions...
1. What exactly is the distraction?
2. What emotion do I feel when this happens?
3. What are some ways I can change my response to the distraction to minimize emotion?
4. What are ways that I can reduce my exposure to this distraction?
5. Can this distraction be eliminated all-together? If so, what steps would I need to take?

We must learn to eliminate our distractions, or balance them by staying centered. These journaling questions will help you to explore these options.

Keep in mind that what is on your "centered" list and your "distraction" list may change weekly, monthly or yearly. Keep updating your worksheet and use it as often as needed for a quick snapshot of where you are in your quest to stay balanced.

"Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for kindness." - Seneca

Think about your last several days. Try to envision the faces of people that you saw, try to remember what they were saying, or what their facial expressions revealed about how they were feeling. Can you remember any vividly? Think not only of your immediate family and friends, but strangers that you encountered while shopping, or walking, or doing errands.

My daughter Alysa is one of the kindness people I know . She is always kind and non judging. Always happy and full of fun! Happy Birthday Alysa! Your the BEST!
